Lies the Marketplace told me: “Your call is important to us…”

in Actually Important, I Need Medicinal Chocolate, Is It Just Me?

YOU LIE! If my call were important to you, I wouldn’t be listening to your insincere recorded “the average wait time is over two minutes” for AN HOUR and counting.

I’ve been trying to get health insurance since December 7th. I have a long record of my attempts, but no actual insurance coverage at this point. despite having tried every option mentioned on the website for the NY marketplace. I’ve spent fruitless hours on hold.

I clicked every link directing me to brokers and navigators in my area. Guess what? None were listed. (I was hoping for Sulu.) I left messages for a few more distant ones and got exactly one call back — offering me a help slot in mid-January.

Another time I clicked a few links and arrived at a page congratulating me on completing my navigator’s training. What?!

I can’t even navigate to the end of your website. I put in a password with a symbol and you told me I could only use “alphabets.”

I finally gave up on the website and drove to a hospital where a navigator was to see people on a first come, first served basis. I got there 75 minutes early and was fifth on the list. By 20 minutes before the meeting was to start, they were turning people away. And these were people who were so desperate for help that they’d taken off from work, traveled in a snowstorm, only to show up early and be told to leave.

Right before my meeting with the navigator, she (bravely) came back to the waiting area to announce that the website was under heavy demand and wasn’t responding. ┬áNice. I met with her anyway, and she knew her stuff. Had the marketplace actually been working, I’m fully confident I would have walked out of there insured.

But it wasn’t. So I didn’t. Just so you know, this isn’t a diatribe by a right-wing, Tea Party Obama-basher. I’m a huge believer in Health Care Reform. We absolutely should have national health care. I’m a liberal and a feminist. I cried when I watched the first inauguration. But this sucks. And New York is supposed to have a well-functioning site.

Yet look at what they call themselves:

This is the official
Website of NY State of Health
The Official Health Plan Marketplace

Pithy, huh? You think they had meetings to decide that only the second “official” should be capitalized?

I’m still on hold, by the way. 58 minutes now.

Yikes! Better luck with that soon, if not immediately, I hope!

Did you ever figure this nonsense out? I tried to find a health plan for my daughter. Income is over $38,000 for just us two and the marketplace is telling me I only qualify for Medicaid?! 1Hr 20min wait and they had no idea what was going on. Transferred me to another line who also had no idea. This is ridiculous!

Medicaid has expanded dramatically and that’s terrific. I am kind of on cusp so played conservative because it seemed my doctors weren’t going to see Medicaid patients. But if hadn’t had insurance I’d have jumped at it. My problems haven’t been with plans, but with website and amount of time and manpower wasted just trying to sign up.
