She Cheats, She Scores!

in Moochie

Moochie’s been playing a lot of tic tac toe lately, and she’s gotten pretty good. She doesn’t lose when she goes first, which is, at least at home, all the time.

Otherwise she won’t consent to play.

We’ve been trying to instill a sense of fairness, good sportsmanship, the whole nine, but thus far, we’ve been no match for a strong-willed five year old with a taste for victory.

The other morning she was playing with Phin while waiting for the school bus. I caught bits of conversation as I passed by.

Mooch: I go first.

Phin: You always go first. You’ve got to let other people go first sometime.

Mooch: OK, you go first.

Hmm. Phin lifts hand to paper.

Mooch: But I go in the middle.

Phin: Mooch…

Mooch: (dictating as they play) I go first. No — you go O’s. Now you block here (points to a square).

Phin: It’s only a block if someone else has two in a row. (put down an O)

Mooch: Now I block here.

Phin: You’re missing my point.

Mooch: You block over here.

Phin: But I don’t wanna go there. (goes where he wants)

Mooch: Da-aad!

Phin: You may be losing the essence of the game.
